About the Journey
Cabalgata del Cielo Rojo, or Red Sky Ride, gets its name from the symbol in Mayan astrology "Caminante del Cielo Rojo" or "Red Sky Walker" (enter Star Wars joke here). It represents exploration and a traveler on both an inner and outer journey. Cabalgata del Cielo Rojo is a journey that is both physical and spiritual based on the partnership between woman and horse. The goal of the expedition is to experience the landscapes, culture, and people of the Argentine countryside in a way that can only be accomplished when one travels on horseback. Argentina is a country with a strong equestrian culture and still relies on horses to accomplish daily work on their local ranches, or estancias. The horses used in the expedition will be Argentine criollo horses, which are renowned for their resilience and stamina. The ride began in El Calafate in November of 2019 and it was planned to arrive in Salta late 2020. In March of 2020 the ride was forced to stop due to a national lockdown for COVID-19. The ride has completed 525 miles through the wild province of Santa Cruz, ending near Parque Perito Moreno. The next chapter of this project will continue north from where we left off.
The Long Riders Guild and its members have given me invaluable advice and support to contribute to the planning and success of my long ride. I highly recommend their website as a resource to anyone interested in planning equestrian travel. The Horse Travel Handbook has proved to be an invaluable tool in my preparation for the ride.
